Myths have become more prevalent in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. This prompted some Ghanaian Medical Experts to debunk some myths about the virus.
The medical experts, Dr. Bertha Serwaah Ayi ,Dr. Yaw Bediako, Dr. Titus Beyou, and Dr. Micheal Owusu debunked these myths during an online interview on JoyNews.
Dr. Ayi touched on the notion that Africans are immune to the virus. It is common to hear people say that blacks are immune to the virus since our number of confirmed cases is lesser than those in the other continents. She debunked this myth by saying that, the low number of confirmed cases is to be attributed to the lower number of testing that has been done in African countries and not immunity to the virus.
The popular myth that the Coronavirus does not thrive in Ghana was also debunked by Dr. Owusu. According to him, the hot climate has nothing to do with infections and as such he advised the public to stop spreading this myth. He also revealed that a temperature of 63-degree Celsius is known to kill the virus which Ghana’s climate doesn’t meet.
Drinking alcohol to prevent infections was also debunked, the experts rather advised using it as an improvised sanitizer since that will help kill germs on the hand.
