I am sure most of us were not expecting this pandemic when we were preparing for school. Every student was probably feeling nostalgic of the immense freedom school offers. The pandemic which started in Wuhan, China has spread to over 150 countries, including Ghana. One of the cases, however, involves a University of Ghana female student who returned from an international trip. Shortly after that, IA’s for that weekend were canceled and subsequently, lectures. As it stands now, most Universities have been closed down.
The once fun and lively community is now a shadow of itself with a handful of students still preparing to leave. As a student myself, I can only imagine that most students are content because they have been given the chance to escape the numerous assignments, Interim assignments and mid-semester exams that were burdening them.
However, another aspect of them will be sad and angry because their freedom has been taken away. On Twitter, students of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology were pushing for authorities to cancel their midsemester exams. Eventually, they got their wish.
Immediately the President ordered for the complete shutdown of all schools both public and private, students, especially males, in both University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology could be seen in various videos, bare-chested, jubilating about their inevitable home going. In their spirit of happiness, they forgot or most probably chose to ignore one of the preventive measures from spreading the virus, social distancing. A month from now, all students will know their fate but until then, keep tight and wash your hands.
