Ghana’s KNUST develops a low-cost ventilator to help in the COVID-19 fight

A group of students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, led by their professor have invented a low-cost ventilator.

The outbreak of the Coronavirus has made the demand for ventilators high, a luxury many countries including Ghana can not afford due to its hefty price tag. This motivated a team of students to come up with a ventilator at a lesser price cost.

According to Professor Mark Aron-Asamoah the head of the team, they have observed the lack of ventilators in the country three years ago and have been working since then to bring to life a less expensive one. The module’s prototype which costs  20,000 cedis is automated and will be the first of its kind in the country when it is finally produced.

The leader of the team acknowledged that the ventilator is 95% complete and will be fully functional in two months if they received the needed financial aid.
